Sprains, Strains & Fractures

The wrist and hand are frequently injured during sport. Injuries range from acute, traumatic fractures in contact sports, such as football, hockey and basketball, to overuse conditions in racket sports, golf and gymnastics. Finger trauma is common in sports that involve catching such as baseball and softball.

Poor technique, such as flicking of the wrists during racket sports instead of a coordinated transmission of force from the trunk, up the arm to the wrist and hand, will lead to the smaller muscles of the elbow, wrist and hand being overused and injured.

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

Pain in the wrist and hand is usually from repeated movements, such as excessive computer keyboarding and mouse use, lifting and carrying babies and children, playing musical instruments and tasks involving repetitive wrist and finger activity.

If the muscles of the forearm, wrist and hand are weak or tight, the chances of injury are greater. Tendons and ligaments in the wrist and fingers become inflamed and scarred as a result of overuse. When the soft tissues in the wrist swell up, the swelling can compress the nerve to the hand and fingers, leading to subsequent numbness and tingling. This is called “Carpal Tunnel Syndrome”.

Treatment

Treatment for wrist and hand conditions is similar to that of the elbow. The most effective physiotherapy methods include ultrasound, deep tissue massage, stretching and strengthening of muscles in the area. If the joints are stiff and not gliding smoothly, mobilizations can be added.  Wrist and hand splints are recommended in some cases.
